Alt text and descriptions
Shows how an image's description becomes its default alt text and how to set alt text for each place an image appears.
Alt text describes an image for people who can't see it, such as screen reader users, and for search engines. Starjay has two levels of it:
- The description belongs to the image in your library. It's the default.
- Alt text for each placement belongs to one place the image appears. The same photo can have different alt text on different pages.
Set an image's description
- 01
Open the image
Click Images in the left rail, then click the image.
- 02
Edit the description
Click Description (it shows missing in yellow when empty). Type a short description of what the image shows.
- 03
Save
Click Save or press Enter.
The description is used:
- As the alt text when the AI places the image.
- As the alt text when you pick the image in a collection's image field and its alt text is empty.
- When you search the library.
Changing the description doesn't change alt text that's already on your pages, because "Existing placements keep their own alt text." If some placements still use the old description, a note says how many and offers Update all to change them too, or Dismiss to leave them.
New images get a description automatically from the AI when you have credits. See The image library.
Set alt text for one placement
- 01
Open the image box
On the canvas, double-click the image. Or select it and click the image icon (Change image) on its label.
- 02
Edit the alt text
Click the field under Alt text · describes this placement and describe the image in its context on this page.
- 03
Save
Click Save or press Enter. Revert or Escape cancels. Clicking away doesn't save.
To mark an image as decorative, so screen readers skip it, save an empty alt text.
If the field shows "No editable alt text", the alt text for this image can't be changed from the canvas. Ask the AI to change it.
Alt text in collections
A collection's image field has its own Alt text box under the image, in each item. See Field types.
Tips for good alt text
- Say what matters about the image in this place, not every detail.
- Leave out "image of" or "photo of".
- If the image contains text that matters, include that text.
