Draft, ready and live pages
How a page's publish state decides whether it goes live, and how to change it.
Each page has a publish state. It decides what happens to the page the next time you publish your site.
| State | What it means | How it shows in the Pages panel |
|---|---|---|
| Ready | The page goes live on the next publish. New pages start here. | Grey icon until you publish. |
| Live | A ready page that's on your published site now. | Green icon. A yellow diamond means it has changes you haven't published yet. |
| Draft | The page stays in the editor and never goes live. | Draft label. |
| Deleted | The page is removed on the next publish. | Deleted label. |
Nothing changes on your live site until you publish. Marking a page only decides what the next publish does.
Change a page's state
Right-click the page in the Pages panel. The publish action changes depending on the page's state:
- Unmark for Publish — on a ready page that isn't live yet. Turns it into a draft.
- Mark for Publish — on a draft. Makes it ready again, so it goes live on the next publish.
- Mark for Depublish — on a live page. The next publish takes it off your live site. It stays in the editor as a draft.
Pages that show CMS items have no publish action of their own.
Why drafts are useful
Drafts let you work on a page while still publishing the rest of the site. A draft never goes live, however many times you publish. Visitors who go to a draft's address see your 404 page.
The AI can also change a page's publish state when you ask it to.
