Selecting things on the canvas
How to select elements on the canvas, reach their parents, work with repeated items, and follow links.
Select something before you style it, insert next to it, delete it, or ask the AI about it. Selecting works in Edit mode (the default). Choose Edit in the top bar if you're in another mode.
Select an element
- Hover over the page. An outline and a small label show the element under the pointer.
- Click to select it. The outline stays, and a label shows the element's tag (for example
h1orsection).
Press Esc to clear the selection.
The label can carry extra icons, depending on what you selected:
| Icon | What it does |
|---|---|
| Image | Change image: opens the image editor for the selected image. |
| Link | Edit link: opens the link editor for the selected link. |
| Sliders | Show element tools: opens tools for flex and grid layouts, lists, tables and form fields. See Layout tools. |
| + Add item | Appears under a selected list or list item. Adds an item to the list. |
A Locked badge means you selected part of a component Starjay manages for you, such as a form field. You can style it, but you can't add or delete elements inside it. See Components.
Select a parent
When you select something small, such as a word inside a button, a path of its parents appears at the bottom-left of the canvas. Click any name in the path to select that parent instead. Click Defocus at the end of the path to clear the selection.
You can also pick any element from the layer tree in the Navigator.
Repeated items
Some content repeats: cards in a grid, items in a list, blog posts in a listing. When you select one copy, the other copies are outlined too, because styling one copy styles them all.
- Press
Enterto narrow the selection to just the item you clicked. - Press
Escto step back out to all the copies.
While the AI panel is open, the label also shows a small scope pill (for example item). Click it to choose whether your next AI request means this one item, its list, or every copy on the page.
Follow a link
Clicking a link in Edit mode selects it instead of following it. To follow it:
- Hold
Cmd(Mac) orCtrl(Windows) and click the link. Links to your own pages open in the canvas. Links to other websites open in a new browser tab. - Or switch to Browse mode in the top bar. In Browse mode the canvas behaves like your live site: links work and nothing is selected. Switch back to Edit to select again.
You can't follow links to your own pages while the AI is working. You'll see Navigation locked while AI is generating.
