    Publish and unpublish items

    Shows how to publish one item or all changes, what the publish dialog tells you, and how to take an item off your site.

    Every item has a draft, where your edits save. Once you publish it, it also has a published version, which is what visitors see. Publishing an item doesn't republish your site, and it goes live within a few seconds.

    Only people publish items. The AI can create and change items, but its changes stay as drafts until you publish them.

    See an item's state

    In the item editor, two pills sit next to the title:

    • Published is green when a version of the item is live, and dim before the first publish.
    • Draft is orange while the draft has changes that aren't published.

    Click Published to view the live version, read-only. Click Draft or Back to draft to return to editing. You can't pick Published before the first publish, or when the draft and the live version are the same.

    In the item list, the Status column shows:

    Status Meaning
    Draft Never published.
    Live Published, and the draft is the same.
    Live · changed Published, but the draft has changes that aren't live.
    Queued… / Publishing… A publish is waiting or running.
    Publish failed The last publish didn't finish. Open the item and click Retry.

      Open the item

      Open the item in the CMS view.

      Click Publish

      Click Publish in the item's header. Pending edits are saved first.

      Check the dialog

      The dialog says what will happen:

      • Linked items that aren't live yet and must go along, under "Also published".
      • Linked items you can choose to publish too, with a checkbox each. Items you leave out show as missing on the live site.
      • Anything that stops the publish. The title changes to "Can't publish … yet" and each problem has Open to go to the item.

      Confirm

      Click Publish. The item goes live within a few seconds. You can keep working while it publishes.

    Publish all changes

    In a collection's toolbar, click Publish all changes. Every change that's ready goes live. Items that aren't ready, for example because a required value is missing, are left out and listed in the dialog under "Left out, not ready yet". If there's nothing to publish, you see "Every ready change is already live."

    Unpublish an item

    Open the item, open ⋯ and choose Unpublish. The item comes off your live site. Its draft stays, and you can publish it again later.

    You can't unpublish an item while live items link to it. The dialog lists them.

    What can block a publish

    • A missing required value. Fill it in. See Required fields.
    • A linked item that can't be published. Fix that item first.
    • An open AI session that changed the item. Save or Reject the session first. The message says "The open AI session changed this item. Accept or reject the session first." Accept means Save.
    • A slug another live item already uses. See Item addresses and slugs.
    • Your site is being published. Item publishes wait until it's done.
