Where an image is used, and deleting
Shows how to see where an image appears on your site and how to delete an image that's no longer used.
See where an image is used
Open Images, click the image, and look under Usage & delivery → Usage. It shows:
- "Used in N places", with a list of where. Uses in your site's code show the file and line. Uses in collection items show the collection, the item and the field.
- "Not used in this site" when nothing uses it.
- "Also in N other sites" when the same image is also used by other sites, for example a site you duplicated.
Delete an image
- 01
Open the image
Open Images and click the image.
- 02
Check it isn't used
Wait for Usage to load. If the image is used anywhere, you can't delete it yet. See below.
- 03
Delete it
Click Delete asset. When asked Remove from library?, click Remove.
The image leaves your library and its address stops working.
Why delete is blocked
You can't delete an image while it's in use. The detail view says "Cannot delete — used in N places" and what to do:
- On a page or component: replace or remove the image on the canvas, or ask the AI to. See Place and replace images.
- In a collection item: replace or clear the image in each item listed.
When the count reaches zero, Delete asset becomes available.
This rule keeps your site from showing broken images. Every image your site shows must stay in the library.
If Starjay couldn't check your collection items, delete stays off, with "Couldn't check whether CMS items use this image. Delete is off until they can be checked." Try again later.
