Build a business site
Build and publish a small business site with a homepage, an About page and a Contact page, from your first prompt to a live address.
In this tutorial you build a site for a fictional bakery called Rise & Crumb. You'll describe the site to the AI, review what it builds, save it, adjust your colors and fonts, fix some wording by hand, and publish.
It takes about 30 minutes. The AI uses credits from your workspace for each request.
Before you start
- You need a Starjay account. If you're on the Free plan, you need a free slot (Free allows 3 active sites).
- Have two or three sentences ready about the business: what it sells, who it's for and how it should feel.
Create the site
- 01
Create a blank site
On the dashboard, click New site. Under Start from, choose Blank. In Name, type
Rise & Crumb, then click Create site. The new site appears in your list of sites.
- 02
Open the editor
Click the site to open it in the editor. You may see Starting your site for a few moments while the editor gets the site ready.
Because the site is blank, the canvas shows a large Describe your site box.
Describe the homepage
- 01
Write your first prompt
Click in the Describe your site box and paste this prompt, or write your own:
A warm, modern homepage for Rise & Crumb, a neighborhood bakery in Portland that bakes sourdough daily and takes custom cake orders. Sections: a hero with the headline "Baked this morning", a short intro, three featured products (sourdough, pastries, celebration cakes), opening hours, customer testimonials, and a call to action to order a cake. Colors: warm cream background, deep brown text, a terracotta accent. Fonts: a friendly serif for headings, a clean sans-serif for body text. The model menu next to the box shows which AI model will do the work. Leave it as it is unless you have a reason to change it.
- 02
Send it
Click the arrow button (Generate page), or press Cmd+Enter (Mac) or Ctrl+Enter (Windows).
The AI panel opens on the right. You see what the AI is doing as it works: a plan checklist, the steps it takes, and a short summary when it finishes. While it works, editing on the canvas is locked.
- 03
Look at the result
When the AI finishes, the canvas shows the new homepage. At the bottom of the AI panel, the AI Session bar shows
1 / 1: this is your first version, and the buttons Save and Reject appear.Don't save yet. You'll add more pages first.
Add the About and Contact pages
You can keep talking to the AI in the same session. Each request becomes another version.
- 01
Ask for an About page
In the AI panel's message box (Describe changes...), type:
Add an About page that tells the story of the bakery: founded in 2015 by two sisters, everything baked on site, flour from a local mill. Include a photo placeholder area and a short team section. Add it to the header navigation.Press Enter to send.
- 02
Ask for a Contact page
When the AI finishes, send:
Add a Contact page with the address, phone number, opening hours and a map placeholder. Add it to the header navigation too. - 03
Check the new pages
Open the Pages panel from the left icon rail. You should see Home first, then the About and Contact pages. Click a page to open it on the canvas.
You can also use the page switcher in the middle of the top bar.
Review the versions and save
- 01
Step through the versions
In the AI Session bar, use the ‹ and › buttons to move between versions. The canvas shows the site as it was at that version. Click the version number to open a list that includes Original (the site before this session) and
v1,v2,v3. - 02
Go back to the version you want to keep
Click the newest version (
v3) if you're happy with everything. If a later request made things worse, you can go back to an earlier version and keep asking from there. - 03
Save
Click Save. Your changes are kept and the session ends.
If you'd rather throw away everything from this session, click Reject instead. Reject puts the whole site back the way it was before the session started.
Adjust your colors and fonts
- 01
Open the Tokens panel
Click Tokens in the left icon rail, then the Colors tab. Under Color Scales, you see the color scales the AI created for your brand, each a row of shades from light to dark.
- 02
Change a brand color
Click the ⋯ button next to the accent scale and choose Regenerate scale. Pick a new base color, then confirm with Regenerate.
Every part of the site that uses that color updates, on every page.
- 03
Change a font
Click the Typography tab. Click the heading font slot to open the font picker, filter by a category such as Serif, and pick a font.
The canvas updates with the new font.
Fix wording on the canvas
- 01
Edit a heading
Make sure Edit mode is on in the top bar. Double-click the hero headline on the canvas, change the text, then press Enter or click somewhere else to keep it. Press Esc to cancel.
- 02
Check the shared header
Your header and footer appear on every page. If you edit text inside them, the change applies to every page that uses them. The editor tells you when an edit affects more than one page.
Publish
- 01
Open the Publish panel
Click Publish at the top right. The Publish panel opens.
- 02
Publish the site
Click the Publish button in the panel. The status changes through Building site..., Deploying... and Finishing routing.... Editing is paused while this happens.
- 03
Visit your live site
When the status shows Live, your site's address appears next to it, for example
rise-and-crumb.starjay.app. Click it to open the live site in a new tab.
If something goes wrong
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| The Publish button is greyed out and says Publishing locked — accept or reject AI changes first. | Open the AI panel and click Save or Reject in the AI Session bar, then publish. |
| The AI changed something you didn't ask for. | Step back with ‹ to the version before it, then ask again more precisely. |
| A request ran out of steps before it finished. | Click Continue in the AI panel to let it carry on. |
| Your edit on the canvas changed every page. | You edited the shared header or footer. Undo with Cmd+Z (Mac) or Ctrl+Z (Windows), then ask the AI to change only that page. |
| The colors or fonts on the canvas didn't change. | Click the Reload Site button in the top bar. |
