Chat with the AI
How to send a request to the AI, follow what it does, queue a follow-up, stop it, and continue when it runs out of steps.
The AI panel is where you ask Starjay's AI to build and change your site. It works in the Canvas view.
- 01
Open the AI panel
Click AI (the chat icon) in the top-right corner of the editor. Click it again, or press
Esc, to close the panel. - 02
Select something (optional)
Click an element or section on the canvas if your request is about it. The AI receives your selection along with your message, and the chat labels your message with what was selected.
- 03
Describe what you want
Type in the box that says Describe changes.... Press
Enterto send. PressShift+Enterfor a new line. - 04
Watch it work
The canvas updates as the AI changes your site. You can keep reading the chat while it works.
- 05
Review and keep or discard
When you're happy, click Save in the session bar above the prompt box. To undo everything since your first request, click Reject. See AI sessions: versions, Save and Reject.
What you see while it works
- A status line that says what the AI is doing right now, such as Evaluating request…, Building context…, Thinking…, Fetching reference site…, Responding… or Working around an error….
- Step rows for each thing it does, such as Updated layout, Updated the brand guide or Visually inspected the page. When the AI takes a screenshot of your page to check its work, a thumbnail appears. Click any thumbnail to see it full size.
- A plan checklist for bigger builds. The AI lists what it will build (Planning…), then ticks items off as it builds them (Building…).
- Color Palette Changes and Typography Changes cards when it adds or changes colors or fonts.
- A summary when it finishes: a collapsed Changes list, how long the request took, and how many credits it used.
Each new message you send is numbered (Request 2, Request 3, and so on) so you can find your way around a long chat.
While the AI works, the rest of the editor is locked so your edits and the AI's don't collide. Panels show Editing locked — AI is generating.
You can reload the page or close the tab while the AI works. It keeps going, and the chat reconnects when you come back.
Ask from the canvas
Double-click text or an image on the canvas. In the box that opens, type in Ask AI to change this… and press Enter. Your request goes to the AI panel with the element already selected.
Queue a follow-up
You don't have to wait for the AI to finish before typing your next message.
- While the AI works, type in the box. It now says Queue a follow-up....
- Press
Enter. Your message appears above the prompt box, marked Queued. - It's sent automatically when the current request finishes.
To cancel a queued message, click the × next to it. Only one message can wait at a time.
Stop the AI
- Make sure the prompt box is empty. While the AI works and the box is empty, the send button turns into a red square.
- Click the red square (Stop generating).
The message shows Cancelling…, then Cancelled. The step the AI is in the middle of finishes first, so stopping can take a moment. Changes it already made stay on your site as part of the session. Keep them with Save or undo them with Reject.
Continue when it runs out of steps
Each request can take up to 30 steps (reading files, editing, checking its work). A big request can need more. When that happens you see:
That request needed more steps than fit in one turn (30 steps). Everything finished so far is saved — continue to pick up where it stopped, or send a smaller request.
Click Continue — pick up where it stopped. The AI checks what it already did and finishes the rest. This is a new request and uses credits like any other.
If a request is interrupted
If you see Interrupted — partial changes kept. Continue with another message, or use Reject to undo., the request ended early for a reason other than you stopping it. Send another message to carry on, or click Reject to undo the whole session.
If the AI provider is busy, you may see a message asking you to retry in a moment. Your work so far is kept. For other messages, see Messages you might see.
