Item addresses and slugs
Explains how slugs make each item's address, and what happens when you change the slug of a live item.
An item page shows one item at an address like /blog/winter-gardening. The last part, winter-gardening, is the item's slug. It comes from the collection's Slug field.
How a slug is made
A slug field is usually generated from another field, often the title.
- Until the item is first published, the slug follows that field as you type. Type "Winter Gardening" in the title and the slug becomes
winter-gardening. - Once you edit the slug by hand, it stops following the title.
- Click Generate next to the slug to make it again from the source field.
- After the item is live, the slug no longer follows the title. Change it by hand if you need to.
If an item has no slug, its address uses the item's ID instead.
Two items can't share a live address
A slug that another item's live version uses is taken.
- A slug that follows the title gets a suffix to keep it unique.
- A slug you type by hand is refused, with a message such as "Can't save: "winter-gardening" is still the live URL of Winter Gardening".
- At publish time, a clash blocks the publish: "Its slug "…" is already the live URL of "…"."
Changing the slug of a live item
You can change a live item's slug. When you publish the change, Starjay adds a permanent redirect from the old address to the new one, so links and search results keep working.
- If you rename it again later, the old addresses point straight at the newest one. There are no chains of redirects.
- If you unpublish or delete the item, its redirects are removed.
- Like all redirects, these only work on your published site, not on the canvas.
