Delete items, fields and collections
Shows how to delete items, fields and collections, what stops a delete, and what "Removing on next publish" means.
Delete an item
In the item list, click the trash icon on the item's row. Or open the item, open ⋯ and choose Delete.
The dialog Delete "…" explains that this "permanently deletes it and its history, and takes it off the live site if it's published." Click Delete to confirm.
When an item can't be deleted
If anything links to the item, from another item's draft or its live version, you see Cannot delete "…" with a list of the links. Remove those links first. If a live item links to it, publish that item again without the link.
Deleting while an AI session is open
If you delete a live item while an AI session is open, it comes off your live site at once. If you then Reject the session, the item comes back as a draft.
Deletes the AI asks for
The AI can't delete CMS content on its own. When it wants to, it shows a card in the chat, and nothing is deleted until you click Delete. See Deletes the AI proposes.
Remove a field
Open the collection, click Edit Schema, click the trash icon (Remove field) on the field, then click Save changes. What happens depends on who uses the field:
| Who uses the field | What happens |
|---|---|
| A page or component in the editor | You can't remove it. The trash icon is disabled, and its tooltip names the pages, for example "Your Blog item pages use this field. Take it out there first, or ask the AI to." |
| Only your live site | It shows under Removing on next publish. It stays, and works as normal, until your next site publish removes it. Click Undo to keep it. |
| Nothing | It's removed when you save. |
The same rules apply to removing a choice from an Enum field, a target collection from a Reference field, and an item type from a mixed list.
Delete a collection
Open the collection, click Edit Schema, then Delete. The dialog Delete …? says how many items will be deleted. Click Delete collection to confirm.
A collection can't be deleted while:
- Pages or components show it. Remove it from them first, or ask the AI to.
- Fields in other collections or object types can link to it. Change or remove those fields first.
If only your live site still uses the collection, it shows "Removing on next publish" and is deleted after your next site publish. Click Undo to keep it.
Delete an object type
Open Object Types, pick the object type and click Delete, then Delete object type. You can't delete it while any field uses it.
Exporting before you delete
There's no button to export CMS content. If you need a copy, ask the AI to list the items, or contact support. See Get support.
