    Required fields

Explains what Required means for collection fields and how to fill values when you make a field required.

In a collection, Required means required to publish. An item with an empty required field still saves, so you never lose work. It just can't be published until the field has a value.

    What you see

    • In the item editor, the field name has a red asterisk, and the header shows what publishing still needs, for example "To publish: Summary is required".
    • In the item list, a yellow chip such as "12 missing Summary" counts the items that lack a required value. Click it to list only those items.
    • If you publish an item that lacks a value, the publish dialog says what needs attention.

Making a field required when items already exist

When you tick Required on a field in Edit Schema, Starjay checks which items have no value. You may briefly see "Checking which items have no …". Then, under the field, you see something like:

5 items in Blog Posts have no Summary. They can't be published until they have one. You can fill them now:

    You can:

    • Set all to one value. The control matches the field type, for example a date picker or an item picker.
    • Or let the AI write each value from each item's own content. This is offered for Text, Long text, Markdown and Enum fields, and it uses credits.
    • Do nothing. The items save as they are and can't be published until each has a value.

The fill happens when you click Save changes, and applies to the items' drafts.

    Items that are already live

Live items keep showing without the value until they're published again. After you save, if live items lack the new required value, a bar offers to fill them:

3 live items have no Summary. The live site shows them without it until they're published again.

For Text, Long text, Markdown, Slug, Link, Color and Number fields, type a value and click Fill live items. This changes only the live versions, and leaves drafts as they are. Click Not now to skip it.

You can't fill live items while an AI session is open. Save or reject the session first.
